Matthew 14:22-33

Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. But immediately he spoke to them, saying, "Take heart, it is I; have no fear."

And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water." He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?" And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

First Christian Church is progressive in viewpoint and policy. We are a freedom-loving body of people, seeking to be Christian in all that we say and do. There is no attempt to dictate in Biblical interpretation or in theological thought. In such matters members have the freedom and responsibility of private judgment. We strive to encourage understanding and cooperation among ourselves and all Christian believers. We are enriched by the diversity of our congregation. We celebrate unity in the midst of our diversity. We seek to show a religious faith that is intelligent, rational, practical and vital to life in the world. People with varying beliefs and religious backgrounds find meaningful fellowship and opportunities for service to God in First Christian Church.

SUPPORT OF THE CHURCH

Our church is supported by voluntary contributions. We have found that is best accomplished through the envelope system which provides for weekly giving to be pledged. Consistent giving is more satisfactory to the giver and enables the Stewardship Committee to plan on the church receiving a uniform, regular amount to meet outreach and current expenses. We make no attempt to dictate what amount should be given, but we do believe a person should give upon the basis of his or her faith and ability, so that it will be an adequate expression of gratitude for God's many blessings.

WORK OF THE CHURCH

Our church manages its affairs under the Lordship of Jesus Christ; determines its faithfulness to the gospel with respect to the basis of membership; controls and may encumber its property; organizes itself to carry out the mission and witness of the congregation; establishes its budget and financial policies; calls its minister(s) and other staff members; and participates through voting representatives in area, regional and general assemblies of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in forming the corporate judgments of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ.)
