CHURCH NEWS
YOUTH MEETINGS
The youth in grades 6-12 will meet Thursday evenings at the church from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Some of the projects we will be doing are preparing and painting the Activity Room walls, planning for the Chi Rho Mission Trip, talking about a mission trip for Sr. High youth, working on the “Creation” mural, and rehearsing plays and songs with puppets.
HOLIDAY WORLD TRIP
We will be making our annual Holiday World trip early this year. The week after school is out, Wednesday, May 28, is the date we have set. Marsha Ochs will be the leader of this trip (Leila and Bob will be on vacation). This trip is for any child or youth who wishes to spend the day at Holiday World. A sign-up sheet is on the Youth Bulletin Board. Children younger than 6th grade have to be accompanied by an adult (over 18 years of age). The group rate for HW this year is $26.95 (we have to have 15 or more in our group). The youth fund will pay $15.00 toward the ticket price for any child or youth who is a member or regular attendee of First Christian Church. Family members and guest will need to pay $26.95. The church van will hold 15 people, first to sign up will get to ride in the church van. On May 28 Holiday World will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. CST. The group will leave FCC at 8:30 a.m. and arrive back at approximately 9:30 p.m.
| CHI RHO MISSION TRIP -- Youth in grades 6-8 will go to Barbee Christian Camp June 5-9. If you are interested in attending come to youth meetings and learn more. |
SUMMER CAMP
The “Early Bird” deadline for summer camp is fast approaching. After May 15th all fees will go up $25.00. The church will pay half of the registration fee for all camps – for youth and children who are regular attendees of First Christian Church. If registrations are turned in after the May 15 deadline, the child’s family will pay the additional $25.00.
Registrations and schedules are on the table by the Prayer Board.
HEARTBEATS OF FAITH
The Heartbeats of Faith campaign that we started last November will be drawing to a close in May. To date we have pledges of $5056.00 and have received donations of $4222.00. If you did not make a pledge when the campaign started, it is not too late to send in a donation now. You can put your donation in an envelope, mark it for Heartbeats of Faith and drop it into the offering plate on Sunday morning or send it to the church office.
SYMPATHY
 | We extend most sincere to the family of Alberta Bright. Alberta died on March 29th and her funeral was held at First Christian Church on April 1.
Our deepest sympathy goes to Chuck & Ericka Hensley and their family upon the death of their son, Devon who died on Saturday, April 27, 2008. Devon’s funeral was held here at the church on Wednesday, April 30th.

THANK YOU NOTES
Thank you again for the lovely luncheon. We all enjoyed it so much. It was nice having time to be together as a family. May God bless you all for your love and support. – Charles and Ann Bright
Thanks to the Antioch Sunday School Class. They recently donated $300 for the Kitchen Committee, $200 for the Coat Bank, and $500 for the Property Committee for mulch and minor repairs. Also, a freewill offering of $205 was given by those attending the Easter Sunrise Service and breakfast.
Thanks to the congregation for responding to fund raisers – The Outreach Luncheon raised $561 for Lawrence County Habitat for Humanity. The men’s Spaghetti Dinner raised $359 toward sending men to Sessions 2008.
Thanks to those who donated food items to support the Camp Committee when they catered the meal for Marriage and Family Alliance on April 5th. The proceeds from that luncheon amounted to $877.12. With that money a new freezer for the Camp kitchen was purchased at $763.20. The remaining amount will be used for camp operations.
Thanks to all our many friends that sent cards and prayers in helping our recoveries. It’s been quite an adjustment for both of us to sick at the same time -- most of all, not to be able to drive. Prayers are the answer and God was always with us. – Janet & Claude Boruff
Dear Christian Church Family and Friends, Knowing that you were praying for us gave us peace during Helen Denny’s illnesses and passing. She always looked forward to communion Sunday and enjoyed chatting with her church friends. Cards always delighted her and she read each card many times. She loved the church. She last attended church during Advent and was spiritually moved by the service, the memories and the beauty of the sanctuary. Thanks to Bob and Leila and all the others who supported us through her “rough” times, and thanks to you for helping with the service and the delicious meal.

I would like to thank everyone for going out of your way to make me feel welcomed. Thank you for giving me a chance to spread the works of Habitat for Humanity. A special thanks to all the hard working cooks that prepared the huge delicious meal. Lastly, a big thanks to everyone’s generosity that was shown toward Habitat for Humanity. Thank you. – Cari Littrell, one of the volunteers with Habitat

NEWS
Gretchen Pentzer has accepted a summer internship at a resort in Missouri. Gretchen will graduate in December from Ball State University with a degree in Hospitality and Food Management.
Leo is still in the hospital – not doing as well as we hoped – three weeks now. He still can’t walk. He is in the Transitional Care Unit and they’re doing all they can to help him. We feel all of your prayers and your love and concern and we’re more grateful than words can say. Love to all, Pearl Jenkins P.S. – No, not in our house yet.
LIONS CLUB EYEGLASS COLLECTION
Our local Lions Clubs need used eyeglasses to be used in their international program to help the poor see better. If you have eyeglasses that you no longer need, please bring them to the church. There is a collection box on the table by the Prayer Board.
FOOD ITEM FOR LIFE
| The food item we are emphasizing for L.I.F.E. during the month of May is canned meats. Bring your food donations and place them in a basket by the doorway. | |
PICTORIAL DIRECTORY
 | The Membership and Evangelism Committees are scheduling photography appointments for our next pictorial church directory. Photos will be taken Monday and Tuesday, May 19 and 20, 2:45 pm – 9:05 pm. Each family will receive a free 8 x 10 photo. If you have not been contacted for an appointment and want to schedule one, contact Sally Allen or Marilyn Olson. |
CAMP FUND ESTABLISHED
An anonymous donor has established the Bedford First Christian Church Camp Fund through Lawrence County Community Foundation. As this fund grows, we will have interest available from the account for camp operations and improvements. It is important that additional gifts be made to this fund to get it high enough that it remains specific to our Camp instead of going into the Community Foundation’s pool of funds. |
ONE HUNDRED DAYS OF PRAYER
We will not be having the early worship service this summer, so there will be a focus on prayer instead. You are encouraged to form a Prayer and Share Triplet – 3 people who will meet together at least ten times for prayer over a 100-day time period. The span of time will be June 1 through September 8. The three people should not be best friends or family members in order that we can develop more relationships in the congregation.
WALT FISHEL HONORED POSTHUMOUSLY BY LIONS INTERNATIONAL
Vivian Fishel received a Medal of Honor for Walt’s work with Lions International. There is information posted on the bulletin board about this award and Walt’s accomplishments.
DAY CAMP
The dates for Day Camp are July 26 and 27. It will be held at Bedford Christian Camp, beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and ending at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. We are using curriculum from Habitat for Humanity. If you would like to volunteer to help at Day Camp contact Leila Dailey or Bonnie Dixon.
SHIPSHEWANA FLEA MARKET TRIP
Have you ever wanted to go to the Shipshewana Flea Market? If so, here’s your chance. Leila will be leading a trip to the famous Flea Market on June 9, 10, 11th. The Flea Market is open on Tuesday and Wednesday only, and we will be at the flea market on Tuesday June 10.
The church van will leave on Monday, June 9, at 2:00 p.m. and will be traveling to northern Indiana (it is a 4 hour trip). We will spend Monday night in the Retreat House at Barbee Christian Camp. Tuesday we will rise early and get to the flea market by 8:00 a.m. (less than an hour from Barbee). The market closes at 5:00 and we will return to the camp for a second night. Wednesday morning we will travel back to Bedford. We can take eleven people, comfortably, in the church van. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the hallway.
The cost of the trip will include: $13.00 per night at the Retreat House ($26.00 total). Fuel costs will be divided among those going (approximately $25.00 each). Each person will need to buy their own meals (six meals—2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 evening meals). We will take a cruise on Lake Webster in the “Dixie,” a stern-wheel double-deck boat, $7.00. You’ll need money to spend at the Flea Market.
Sign up now if you want to go. I will need at least two other drivers who are on the insurance list, so two spots are already taken for drivers.
